Shop Talk: Monsanto Sues California Over Carcinogens List

MONSANTO HAS filed a lawsuit against California to prevent glyphosate from being added to the state’s list of known carcinogens, Reuters reports.

According to the news outlet, the state plans to add glyphosate to its list of cancer-causing chemicals after the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified it as a probable human carcinogen last year. California law requires the state keep a list to inform residents of their risk.

Reuters says Monsanto has disputed IARC’s assessment, citing decades of studies deeming the chemical safe.

If glyphosate is added to the list, products containing the chemical will require a “clear and reasonable” warning to consumers that glyphosate is known to cause cancer, which Monsanto says will damage its reputation and violate its First Amendment rights.
