Takeaways
- No-tillers are not convinced the Trump administration can get farm equipment manufacturers to slash price
- Only 14% of no-tillers indicate a 15% drop in price would entice them to order a new planter for the 2027 cropping season.
- Updating to the latest “bells and whistles” technology by retrofitting an existing planter is also a possibility.
Two weeks ago, the No-Till Farmer editors surveyed no-tillers regarding their thoughts on seeding rig and other equipment purchases this year. The 2-minute survey asked growers for their opinions on equipment buys based on recent President Trump reports.
1. Since The Trump administration says it is working with manufacturers to reduce prices on farm equipment purchases, do you think this is likely to happen this year?
- 9% of no-tillers said yes.
- 78% don’t expect it to happen.
- 13% weren’t sure.
2. If manufacturers dropped the price of no-till planters, no-till drills and no-till air seeders by 15%, would this entice you to order a new seeding rig for the 2027 cropping season?
- 14% said yes.
- 64% said no.
- 22% were not sure.
Tough Times, Tough Decisions
With these challenging times, I also am sharing data from our 2026, 2025 and 2024 No-Till Farmer Benchmark surveys on anticipated equipment purchases.
| Year | Dollars |
| 2026 | $38,440 |
| 2025 | $29,000 |
| 2024 | $64,000 |
Expected Buying Intentions
When it comes to potential equipment buys this year, no-tillers who answering the 2026 No-Till Farmer Operational Benchmark Survey shared the following.

| Drone | 20% |
| Planter | 19% |
| Drill | 14% |
| Self-propelled sprayer | 14% |
| Fertilizer applicator | 11% |
| Pull-type sprayer | 10% |

| Air seeder | 9% |
| Vertical till rig | 4% |

Taking the Plunge?
When thinking about investing in the latest planter “bells and whistles” technology, you need to determine the prospective impact on yield, income, narrowing the ideal seeding widow and bankable returns. Rather than sticking with an older model rig, updating to the newest technology by retrofitting an existing planter could also be a possible move.
