New Technologies Help Deliver Better Efficiency

Products that eliminate seed planting double-ups on end rows or apply only needed nitrogen rates can make no-tillers more profitable.

While no-tillers are today enjoying high commodity prices, I think it’s fair to assume that they won’t continue too far into the future.

Crops are a worldwide currency and many countries, including Russia and South America, are investing heavily in agriculture. Eventually, their investment will create larger volumes of commodity crops that will help drive prices down to more normal levels.

For that reason, U.S. no-tillers need to take advantage of the increased income they’re receiving right now for their crops to invest in their management systems to increase their standards of efficiency.

The No-Till On The Plains Conference held recently in Salina, Kan., and the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky., offered a vast array of products and information from around the world. Here are a few products that caught my attention that offer a glimpse into the technology available today to help no-tillers be more efficient and profitable.

Depending on field shape and size, I estimate that 5% to 10% of many fields are double-planted on the end rows. This is a waste of your resources.

With all the new traits available today, many corn hybrids exceed $200 per bag. Take, for example, a producer who plants 1,000 acres of corn. If seed corn is $200 per bag, the average population is 30,000 seeds per acre and the producer has doubled-up planting on the end rows by 10%, that amounts to 100 additional acres of unnecessarily planted corn.
