Marion Calmer’s approach to farming can be summarized by the following words: “We can’t improve what we don’t measure.” That approach was taken by this Alpha, Illinois, no-tiller from some very humble beginnings. Today, he’s highly respected for his onfarm research and has been honored as one of the 25 Living Legends of No-Till. He was also one of the early recipients of a No-Till Innovator award.
Calmer’s research measuring both the yield and profitability of farming practices led to the creation of Calmer Agronomic Research Farm. It also led him to start his own business, Calmer Corn Heads, with the invention of a 15-inch-row corn header. And he has developed stalk roll replacement kits for combines to better process corn residue at harvest for a better no-till planting experience the next spring – all behind what he learned from onfarm research.
In today’s No-Till Farmer podcast, brought to you by Topcon Agriculture, we look back on my recent interview with Marion Calmer where he talks not only about the importance of onfarm research, but shares the many things he’s learned from research on his corn and soybean operation in western Illinois.
