Q: I read about somebody who made brackets to mount scales under seed boxes on a no-till grain drill.

A: Call David Wilson of Greensburg, Ind., at (812) 663-8756. Using this attachment should be more accurate than using four tube sensors on a 15-foot wide no-till drill.

Q: With anhydrous ammonia prices over $300 a ton and 28 percent liquid nitrogen approaching $150 a ton, I’m considering taking corn out of my rotation. What are your thoughts?

A: As far as a financial decision, it’s probably not a bad move. But looking at the bigger picture, you’re probably going to have your no-till crop rotation out of sequence for 3 years.

The money you save on nitrogen purchases this year will be lost to possible complications in no-tilling soybeans after soybeans, such as disease worries or dealing with soybean cyst nematode concerns. The better decision might be to trim your nitrogen rates back to the bone with no-tilled corn.
