Seed Covers with a Spreader

Nick Guetterman, as interviewed by Martha Mintz, explains why his family moved away from air seeding their cereal rye cover crop.

We used to try and seed cover crops with our air seeder. That option has become too slow, cumbersome and expensive. It would mean shelling out a bunch of money to have someone run the air seeder and cause a lot of wear and tear on the equipment. It’s just not feasible, and broadcasting seems to work well for us with the number of acres we cover. I would argue even on a smaller farm that the cost of labor and equipment would rule out using a drill to seed cover crops.

Learn about how the Guettermans are now using a spreader to seed their cereal rye and how they manage the cover in the article “What I’ve Learned from No-Tilling: Focus on Organic Matter, Flexibility Keeps No-Till Farm One Step Ahead” in the June 2017 issue.
