An Introduction to Strip-Tilling
Building strips in the fall leaves a mound of soil in the row area that remains 5-7 degrees warmer than the surrounding soil, says Cliff Roberts of Kentland, Ind. Fall stripping allows ideal fertilization placement and eliminates compaction in the row area. Having already strip-tilled for a half dozen years, Roberts indicated he had done it all wrong the first 3.
Grid Testing Pays When No-Tilling
It’s a time-consuming practice, but Tom O’Dell says grid soil testing is relatively cheap if you have access to a computer. The veteran no-tiller from Losantville, Ind., urges no-tillers to soil test more frequently and pay attention to the acidity levels in the top 3 inches. He also told attendees the capacity for cation exchange in no-tilled soils is as critical to success as the actual presence of nitrogen or phosphorous.
