Why Liquid Nitrogen Works With No-Till Burndowns

Check out unique ways no-tillers use liquid nitrogen to boost early-season weed control.

Plemty of highly practical ideas for combining burndown herbicides with liquid nitrogen for more effective early-season weed control came out of a survey conducted last winter.

Attendees at the seventh annual National No-Tillage Conference in St. Louis, Mo., shared ideas on combining these products to increase weed control.

“Liquid nitrogen increases triazine herbicide activity.”

—Allen Berry, Nauvoo, Ill.

“We use 28 percent liquid nitrogen, 2,4-D and Bicep in a one-pass early preplant program.”

—Joel Douglass, Martell, Neb.

“We apply 1 to 5 gallons per acre of liquid nitrogen as a herbicide enhancer.”

—Alan Brooks, Markesan, Wis.

“We mix 10 gallons of 28 percent nitrogen with no-till corn herbicide.”

—Ed Mies, Loami, Ill.

“We mix 1 gallon of 28 percent liquid nitrogen with our herbicides.”

—Todd Hesterman, Napoleon, Ohio

“We broadcast Roundup and Harness with 28 percent liquid nitrogen.”

—Ray Rauenhorst, Easton, Minn.

“We go with a 28 percent liquid nitrogen carrier for non-herbicide weed burndown.”

—Mike Solberg, Colfax, Wis.

“Half our nitrogen goes down as a pre-plant liquid with herbicides. The rest is applied in dry form.”

—Joe Hottel, Burkittsville, Md.

“We apply 28 or 32 percent liquid nitrogen with added zinc just after no-tilling corn.”

—Doug Caffrey, Thornton, Iowa

“We use 10 gallons per acre of liquid nitrogen which acts as a starter. However, we increased the Roundup rate by 8 ounces per acre to offset fertilizer burn.”
