Difficult visibility IN the field prompted no-tiller Ron Hoffman of Hebron, Ind., to consider switching from a foam guidance system to the Outback Guidance System.

Hoffman, who has been no-tilling since 1989, zone-tills 900 acres of corn and 770 acres of beans and had been using spray foam markers. In the field, Hoffman was having trouble seeing through the old crop residue.

“When you’re spraying beans, sometimes you can’t see the foam,” he says. Hoffman was considering purchasing the Outback Guidance System and decided to research the system further. After talking with no-tillers at the National No-Tillage Conference in Cincinnati, he made his decision and purchased one.

“The system relieves pressure from the person who is no-tilling,” he says. “You’re not always struggling to find the mark and it eliminates fatigue so you don’t have to worry if you’re too close or too far away.”

Hoffman says the Outback Guidance System is easy to use and can be set up within 10 minutes. It’s also easy to move from one piece of equipment to another. He used the system to spread fertilizer last spring. “It was right on the money,” he says. He also sprayed herbicides on beans and is experimenting with ways to plant without markers.
