Get After Those Troublesome No-Till Corn Insects!

A review of proven insect-control measures offers new ideas for combatting no-till pests.

Additional uses for several older products may let you do a better job of controlling insects in your no-tilled corn this summer. Here’s what company reps had to say about getting more effective insect control in no-tilled corn at this year’s National No-Tillage Conference.

New Regent Developments

Daren Bohannan says 2001 studies indicate that Regent can have a significant impact on European corn borer.

“This is the only product that will control first-generation European corn borer,” says the Aventis technical service representative from Athens, Ill. “While this isn’t as good as no-tilling a Bt hybrid, it will provide protection throughout the growing season from wireworms, grubs and other rootworms that are serious pests in no-tilled corn fields.”

While liquid Regent has been on the market for 5 years, it features a unique chemistry that can be applied with liquid fertilizer or water, instead of requiring dry insecticide boxes on your no-till planter.

“No-tillers like the flexibility of application with this product,” says Bohannan. “The convenience factor, tank refill speed and the fact that you can apply it with liquid starter fertilizer makes it very convenient for many no-tillers.”

YieldGard Rootworm Control

Monsanto’s Randy McElroy says the company’s new YieldGard rootworm product is not yet cleared for U.S. usage. The company is targeting a commercial launch only after European and Japan consumer-use approvals for this corn have been secured. The new product will complement the company’s YieldGard corn borer line.
