Improving Your No-Till Planter

Actively responding to the questions of fellow farmers, no-tillers have been eager to jump into a number of different hot topics.

This month has been particularly busy, with no-tillers chiming in on topics such as improving no-till planters, how to decide if no-till is right for you and if there ever is a good time to deep rip your no-till ground.

Improving Your No-Till Planter

What improvements are you going to make to your no-till corn planter before spring? I’m using most of the Martin system except for the drag chains.

I use the Martin equipment as well. Drag chains are a must to break up clods and level out the worked strip. I would not go without the chains, which makes for a cheap improvement.

I replaced my Yetter rear knives last year with Kinze single-disc openers, which made no-tilling a pleasure. The Yetter units were always plugged up.

This year, I’m only doing routine no-till planter maintenance, such as adding new blades and new bearings on my Martin closers.

Make sure your no-till planter is running level when no-tilling. You may have to wait until no-tilling season to check because it varies depending on residue, soil type and weather.
