USDA reported 46% of corn planted as of the week ended May 2, according to the latest USDA Crop Progress report. This surpassed the 17% reported planted in the previous week, but fell below the 48% planted in the same week last year. The 5-year average planting rate for this week was 36%.
Some 8% of corn was reported emerged in the same report, above both the 7% emerged last year and the 3% emerged in the week prior. The 5-year average planting rate for this week was 9%.
USDA also reported 24% of soybeans have been planted, an increase from the 21% planted by this point last year. Mississippi reported 54% of its soybeans planted as of May 2, followed by Iowa at 43% and Illinois at 41%.
According to the report, 16% of cotton has been planted, below the 17% reported planted in the same week last year. California reported 65% of its cotton planted as of May 2, followed by Arizona with 63% planted.
