Best management practices for soil and water conservation routinely involve no-till adoption, while the best management practices for nitrogen fertilizer emphasize nitrogen source, rate, timing and placement, says Tony Vyn, agronomist for Purdue University.

Vyn’s research group has determined that the combination of no-till and nitrification inhibitors added to side-dressed UAN dramatically limits nitrogen gas emission losses to the atmosphere and improves corn nitrogen-use efficiency. In this presentation, Vyn shows how nitrogen rates and timing impact corn yields and air quality and how no-tillers can claim partial credit for improving air quality.
