For early season pre-emergence control of more than 30 broadleaf weeds and grasses in soybeans, Bayer Corporation officials have announced registration of Domain 60 DF soil-applied herbicide. It is a combination of flufenacet, the new oxyacetamide grass chemistry from Bayer, and metribuzin in a convenient to handle, low-use rate dry flowable formulation.

In good news for no-tillers, Scott Fleetwood, soybean market manager for Bayer, says Domain can be applied as a pre-emergent without incorporation. The herbicide is designed to be used as a “set-up” product followed by a planned post-emergence application of Roundup, other transgenic program products or conventional post soybean herbicides.

“Because of weed shifts, weeds gaps in post herbicides and application timing issues associated with post-only programs, there’s a definite need for a cost-effective, broad-spectrum pre-emergence soybean herbicide,” says Fleetwood. “Domain provides 3 to 6 weeks of early season residual control of many weeds, including velvetleaf, lambsquarters and waterhemp species, that often escape in post programs.”

With improved early season control, growers can reduce yield drag caused by weed competition, control multiple weed flushes and widen the application window for post herbicide applications.

“Research consistently shows that growers can more effectively control weeds all season long and harvest more soybeans when weeds are controlled early in the season,” he adds.

Depending on weed species, weed pressures, soil characteristics and length of desired residual control, Domain should be applied at rates of 9 to 16 ounces per acre. A rate of 10 ounces per acre, followed by an effective…
