New EPA Approvals Coming For Pesticides

On June 16, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered Gauntlet, a new pre-emergence soybean herbicide from the FMC Agricultural Products Group. This herbicide combines sulfentrazone, the active ingredient in Authority, with cloransulam-methyl, the active ingredient in FirstRate, a herbicide which is manufactured and marketed by Dow AgroSciences.

Mike Steffeck, Gauntlet product manager, says Gauntlet will control a wider spectrum of broadleaf weeds than any other pre-emergence soybean herbicide. When combined with a grass herbicide such as Treflan, Pendimax or Command, Gauntlet provides season-long control of grasses and broadleaves in one pre-emergence application.

EPA has also approved the use of Capture 2EC insecticide from FMC for planting time use against corn rootworms. Bifenthrin, the active ingredient in Capture, has been tested under heavy rootworm pressure and exhibited better or equal control than standard rootworm products. The product controls corn rootworm (northern, western, southern, Mexican) cutworms, seed corn maggot, wireworm, seed corn beetle and grubs.

Griffin will market its own brand of paraquat under the trade name Boa. The firm’s EPA registration includes all paraquat crop markets, applications and tankmix options.

Ready Master ATZ from Monsanto has been approved by EPA for pre-emergence use in corn and sorghum. Introduced last year for over-the-top application in Roundup Ready corn, the herbicide provides both burndown and residual activity on grasses and broadleaf weeds. An application of 2 quarts per acre contains as much glyphosate as 1 quart of Roundup Ultra.
