A common perception for years among growers is that soybean yields have reached a plateau. Fred Below says understanding the main effects and interactions of six categorical factors — weather, fertility, variety, foliar crop protection, seed treatment and row spacing — may help no-tillers improve their soybean yields.
With support from research assistant Jason Haegele, the University of Illinois plant physiologist shows how a high-tech management system increased yields by nearly 10 bushels vs. a standard production system. Their results show the importance of choosing a high-yielding, locally adapted soybean variety and managing it with improved fertility and a full suite of crop protection products.
