Repeated Glyphosate Use Accelerates Weed Resistance

In one of the largest retrospective studies ever done on glyphosate effectiveness, researchers from the USDA and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign warn against continued use of a single herbicide year-over-year. After the first several years of repeated glyphosate use, there is a rapid decrease in effectiveness against 7 major weeds, according to a study that assessed 25 years of data from the USDA and University of Illinois.

Honoring Bill Northey’s Influence

Memorial services for Bill Northey, former Iowa ag secretary and USDA leader, honored a man who made a “tremendous impact” on soil conservation, water quality and renewable energy in Iowa and beyond. Northey died unexpectedly Feb. 5. He was known as a fierce advocate for producers, a passionate leader, and a loving friend, father and farmer. 

“Bill brought a farmer's work ethic to every aspect of his life, and he was tireless in promoting the state of Iowa, its people and its agriculture," a funeral pamphlet reads. "His legacy transcends the fields he cultivated, touching countless lives and inspiring future agricultural leaders."

Added P Not Always Necessary

Phosphorus (P) fertilizer does not always result in a positive yield response, says Ohio State University Extension. A 2023 study summarized 457 replicated field P trials conducted over the last 45 years across 40 counties in Ohio.
