as a neophyte to the notion of no/min/nothing tillage - there appears to be an endless stream of ideas/theories/etched in stone opinions on the pros and cons of applying thru spayers the effectiveness of liquid fertilizer( esp. nitrogen)- i've been told/advised there is tremdous/minimum loss thru this method . So does any one out there have any real world data or advise PLEASE

John With N prices this year it will only take 15 to 20 lbs of N loss to pay for extra trip. Also without the N in a band the soil microbs have full access to all of the N. If conditions are wrong experts say you could lose 30 to 40% of the urea portion of the N on the surface. I'd pay the chem trip and somehow inject the N. Robert

Here in my part of central PA, it seems to depend on how much time you have on how you handle you nitrogen needs. Many of the dairy farmers tend to put most/all of their N on thru the sprayer. We don't have time for multiple trips. Some of grain farmers around here do handle their N either thru the planter/dribble it on in standing corn/spray it on with the herbicide or a combination of methods. The best way for you comes down to a cost/benefit decision. How much time do you have to handle N once or more than once. Myself, being a dairy farmer, find it easiest to load the sprayer once with N and herbicide and make only one trip over the field and accept some N lost.

Looking to apply liquid 32% with drop tubes at 4-6 leaf stage. I have a 6 row seeder and a 90 foot sprayer boom. Do people have trouble with the drop tubes hitting in between the rows. Does adding ammonia thiosulfate help reduce N losses to the air?
