I've been notilling for more than 15 yrs. and really like the results. Having said that, I'm having a problem. I was always told that after no-tilling for several years the soil would be very mellow. I'm still having problems getting the planter to hold depth. I have a 3600 Kinze planter and have to go to the third setting to hold consitent depth.
I'm able to do this because I have reduced inner diameter depth wheels. Without them, there is too much pressure in the softer spots and it compacts the soil over the seed. I'm using row cleaners but no coulters.
I'm assuming my problem is with compaction from wheel traffic from the year before, although I try to stay off the fields when they're wet, and I don't have excessively heavy equipment. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

What kind of soil are you planting into? I have only been no-tilling for a few years into high magnesium red clay in southeastern Indiana. After an application of gypsum last fall, my soils do seem to be much more mellow.
