My family operates a ranch up at the tip of northern California. We have been exposed to the positive attributes of no-till and desire to start implementing some of those strategies as soon as possible. I would be delighted if you could very briefly answer a few questions. Thanks everyone!

1. Can you seed alfalfa into wheat or wheat into alfalfa (in a crop rotation)?

2. What are your thoughts about the possibility of strategies in the High desert climate/short growing seasons in Modoc County?

3. Are there any sustainable practices or innovations that you have discovered to advance the efficiency of agricultural practices in Northern California? (I apologize for the last post, it was a copy paste from an email.)

Here in Michigan it's not uncommon for growers to no-till alfalfa into wheat stubble. It's a matter of sowing alfalfa early in the fall/late summer so there is enough moisture to establish a stand before a hard freeze. I'd guess in Northern California moisture might not be a problem? So, I don't see why you couldn't successfully follow wheat with alfalfa.

Barry, I tried to clean this up as much as I could, please re-post this if it's not clear the way it's presented.

Barry, you might try to hook up with Jeff Mitchell from the University of California-Davis, mitchell@uckac.edu. He does a lot of work with sustainable farming in the state and they have a conservation ag workgroup. You may be too far south, but you could also try the Pacific Northwest Direct Seed Association (http://www.directseed.org/). Good luck! Let us know if we can do anything else to help.
