I am going to no till corn into wheat and soybean stubble.  This is my first time no-tilling.  I purchased a JD 7000 which was used for no-till previously so it has some stuff.  Should I switch the no-till coulter for row cleaners?  How much fertilizer should I apply with the planter?  Should I add Keeton seed firmers and spiked closing wheels on one side of each row, or should I get spikes for both?

Corn doesn't like trash. You need a clean row. Try to adjust your row cleaners so they remove the trash but do not disturb the soil any more than you have to. I put all of my fertlizer on with the planter. Starter in the row and N 2" on each side on top of the ground. Spiked wheels work best for wet soil. Try to wait until your soil is dry. If you have dry and wet spots you could use one spike and one solid closer wheel.

How much N are you putting on?  I find that I can lose to much N if the soil is cool and damp, which would be a much higher probability with no till than conventional. I was thinking 60-80 N's at planting and then coming back with another shot of 60-80, depending on how much I think my have volitilized.

I put on 120 to 149 pounds of nitrogen mixed with 10% sulfur and 1 % calcium. This is designed to make N less volatile.

Chris, if you want to try no-till and you have no-till coulters on a 7000 John Deere, check the diameter on the coulters. If they're worn 1 inch from new, relace them. Set your planter to plant 30,000. Place 150 to 200 pounds of starter in the row. I use Nutrasphere on my urea. I want 150 pounds of acutal 46-0-0. That 300 pounds of 46-0-0. I put half on before I plant, and then the rest on when the corn is 4 inches high. Try no-till in half your corn. The transition to no-till can be cut in half by using cover crops.
