Does anyone have experience using the 'alternate opener setting' described in the JD1560 & 1590 no-till drills operator manual?

Yes, it allows you to plant down 30 in corn rows without any of the gauge wheels running directly on the stalks. We changed them back this year because we now have a 15 in bean planter and sow all of our wheat following soybeans. Switching the units is kind of a bitch but it was worth it for us. We planted 15 in beans with the rear gang to see if they were a fit for our farm. Everything seemed to work a little better. More even stand and emergence, less seed also. We planted across the corn rows for many years before, should have done it sooner.

Hey thanks Tom. I have been told that a 'kit' for this change is needed from JD, did you use one? I guess from your reply that you didn't have any issues after the change(i.e. trash collecting between gauge wheels and so forth). I am glad to hear you say that it worked better. Without th gauge wheels running over root crowns I would think that it would be a better seeding envirornment.
