How often to change discs on planters
reply from
Ed Marek
I am interested in finding out how often most farmers change out the seed discs on their planters? Also so do most of you do it yourself or have the implement dealers do it? Also: where do most of you buy your replacement discs? Working on a project it improve the life of these discs and just doing some research.

Ed, We replace ours on a JD 7000 planter @ 13.75-14". They never wear uniformly & when the majority reach 14" they are replaced as they will start stringing seed all over the place if you run them any longer than that. We normally use John Deere replacement discs as they seem to last a little longer. I feel that none of them last as long as they should, but they do wear out faster in No-Til opoerations. THe last time re replaced the discs, We used the JD heavier thicker blades & they have lasted a little longer, but we have problems breaking the hubs. Have broken several this time. THey had a heavier hub & bearing on them, but the heavier bearing was enough longer that the retaining nut would not fit on the spindle as it is shorter on the 7000 series than on the 7200 models. We also replace the "Wear Tips" between the blades & they wear out very fast. Would be very interested on the project you are working on to increase the life of these discs & wear tips. Grant

Replace your "wear tips" with tips from R-K. They will outwear OEM many times over and have "wings" that help reduce flexing of the openers. Find at rkproducts.com

Agree with David K on the RK seed tube guards.
I'd be very reluctant to run the blades as long as Grant C does. They wear thin and do a lot of flexing when they're that far gone. I would replace when they've lost 3/4" diameter. But that time, the bevel is gone, and so they're dull (I realize they eventually sharpen up again if you run them until they're worn really small, but they're paper thin by that time and doing way too much flexing to make a decent furrow).

Matt, I would not argue very much on what diameter to replace the opener discs. I have just been following what John Deere recommends to me & getting along OK. Notice, I only advocated going any below 14" because of the occasional set that is 13.75" when the rest are down to 14" I do want to look into the RK wear-tips. I went to the site you show in your answer to my letter & looked @ the pictures of the RK Wear tips & they look good. I do question the nut you mentioned for using on the HD double row opener bearings. How do you put them on? As I remember it when we replaced our blades w/ the 3.5 MM blades & bearings, theywere flush w/ the end of the spindle. How does this nut work in this case? I am certainly interested in something that will reduce my problem of breaking the bearing hubs. Appreciate any help you may be. Thank You, Grant
