Cover Crops
Helicopter Cover Crop Seeding
reply from
Ken Dudley
I grew up on a farm in MN and moved away as a teenager. I've been flying helicopters for 30 years to the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Managed to save a few dollars over the years and buy a helicopter. Thinking about part time retirement, do any of you farmers think I can stay busy for a few months in the fall laying down some cover crop seed. I also have a trailer for my equipment and could travel to anywhere. Ken

I farm in westcentral wisconsin, where it's hard to establish cover crops in corn-soybean rotation.I farm 255 acres. There's interest in flying on covercrops, but You will need more acres to travel my way.

Mark if you are interested in having cover crops aerially applied talk to Damon Reabe at Reabe's Spraying Service over in Waupaun. We are down near Janesville and had him come down and seed annual ryegrass with an airplane on about 1100 acres. He did a good job and is very interested in expanding into this business. He is very responsive and has spent a lot of time following up on the results. This year was the first time he had seeded this, so it was a learning experience for both of us. I was surprised to learn that in 20 inch rows that the ryegrass is better established where it was seeded into corn than into soybeans.
