Seeded oats this spring as a nurse crop to help establish alfalfa seeding. Combined oats last week. Oats were excellent (90 bu/ac), however, non of the alfalfa came up. Am planning on trying the same thing next year, but was wondering if I should seed a cover crop, and what to seed if I did. Would need to be something safe for cattle to graze this winter and next spring. Would also like something that would put some N in the ground. Lastly, any ideas on how to seed it. Have never no-till seeded oats or alfalfa, just corn and beens. Have JD 8300 with single discs, doubt they would go in the ground. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated!

Here in SW Iowa, we had an very wet spring. We should have had plenty of moisture to germinate. But it appears to me that the alfalfa never came up, or if it did, it died long ago, because I can't see any traces of stems. We've normally had excellent hay stands after oats. I would agree that sometimes the alfalfa will over take the oats. But last year we raised nearly 100 bu. oats, which is very good for our area, and now have some of the best looking alfalfa ever. For whatever reason, the alfalfa didn't grow, and now I'm looking for an economical way to control the weeds, and maybe provide some feed for my cows.
