I recently purchased a used six row rawson cart that tills a strip in front of my planter. It is equipped with a tank for 28%. I bought a pull type 3000 Kinze planter which is attached behind it. There are several farmers in my area which are using this basic system and seemed satisfied. Are there any pitfalls or suggestions which you have that would be beneficial? I am wondering about such concerns as planting conditions, liquid fertilizer placement, hybrids, etc. I have never no-tilled before. Thank you.tsboelter@aol.com

I have used the Rawson setup for 5 years with great resalts. I placed all the 28 or 32% 4" to the side, this is a ideal N. sorce. This gives a nice tilled strip, as good of seed bed as any field cultivater. My problem was I have mostly clay soil and I was tilling up to much sticky mud for the planter. My yields increased every year and I was well pleased with the yields and cost of prodution. If fields are clean I liked spraying Dual or Prowl on a month before planting. Or else a burndown and residual at planting time. It is a good system. Have a good spring. John

A few problems that some farmers have had with the 3 coulter system is 1) the lead coulter that runs in the seed row, you cant control the depth, a coulter should never run deeper than seed depth,2) the lead coulter hairpins to much residue in the seed trench,, no seed to soil contact. also the weight of the system in wet soils will add to soil compaction. dont try to turn your seeding system in to a tillage tool.....

I would have to agree with Jeff . Here in Ontario I have seen all kinds of planters for sale with 3 coulter set ups on them . Usually in the spring you can buy coulters for about a third of the price of new . Most guys up here seem to go to a one coulter system or get away from no-till all together . I am hoping to see some results from the nu-till system here this year . Most sales of three coulter systems happen because it is a compromising way to get into no-till . Usually they are glad to take your money but have no Idea how to service you after when you have problems . They are in the bussiness of selling iron not a complete system that works ..

Tom,We have been using system for 11 years wouldn't make any changes. We run the 3 coulters all the same depth 4 inches deep. The seed has never move deeper. If you have done field work before it is about the same principle. We have had the 6 row cart with pull type planter. Now we have the 12 row cart with 3pt hitch. They both work very good.We our beating nu-till in our area.A friend of mine has won the national corn growers in Indiana 3 times in a row, the no-till division with using zone-tillage& the conventional division. You need to know your soils. If they are in balance.Do soil testing, ask for base saturation. They should read Ca 70% Mg 15% that is proper. So good luck.
